The world has changed dramatically in a very short period of time.  If there are any positives to take from the COVID-19 crisis, it is in the demonstrated resilience and courage of those on the front lines of the fight against this pandemic.  That certainly includes our customers in the fleet industry, who provide essential services to our communities every single day.

Over the past few months, those services have become more important than ever, so I’d like to personally wish each and every one of you a sincere thank you from everyone at XL Fleet. And I’d like to provide an overview of what we are doing as a business to support your efforts.

What’s on Your Fleet Electrification Checklist?

Ever since transportation officially took over as the top contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S., companies and municipalities of all sizes have taken the lead on solving the problem by setting and committing to aggressive sustainability goals.  While these efforts are commendable and critically needed, they have put added pressure on fleet managers to adopt more green vehicle solutions to help curb this trend.

As a result, fleet electrification has become one of the industry’s most popular initiatives in recent years. Electrified vehicles (EVs) can help fleets reduce fuel costs, lower emissions, and move the needle toward meeting sustainability objectives – but they’re not an ideal fit for every application or environment.

There are more commercial EVs available today than ever before, ranging from battery electric (BEV), to hybrid electric (HEV) and plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) – all of which have their own unique advantages and disadvantages depending on the application.

This month’s Profiles in XLence employee spotlight features John Heberlein, Production and Inventory Control Manager in XL Fleet’s Quincy, IL office.

 
1. How long have you been with XL, and what is your role?

I have been with XL since June of 2017, beginning in a part time role and then coming on board full time in April of 2018. In my role as Production and Inventory Control Manager in our Quincy, IL office, I am responsible for managing our incoming material, scheduling the production process from start to finish, and ultimately shipping our end products to customers throughout North America.

2. What is the best part of your job, or a favorite project you’ve been involved with, and why?

My favorite part of my job is working with my co-workers to produce a sustainable product that will benefit not only our clients, but our environment – both now and in the future. My favorite project was being an integral part of opening XL’s first branch office in Quincy, and helping it to become an integral part of XL’s company and culture.

XL Celebrates 100 Million Electrified Customer Miles

XL customers have driven 100 million miles using the company’s hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric drive systems, according to the company, which is also celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Since 2009, XL has electrified the fleets of some of the largest and most recognized companies, municipalities and organizations in North America. One of XL’s first customers, Coca-Cola, has deployed nearly 300 hybrid-electric GMC Chevrolet Express vans since 2012.

XL recently examined the data from the first 10 Coca-Cola vehicles deployed between 2012 and 2013.  The vehicles are still on the road today and have driven an average of 150,000 miles each — one van has more than 215,000 miles — with an average fuel-economy improvement of 20.2% over their lifetime.

This month’s Profiles in XLence features Scott Parisi, XL’s Director of Customer Service, who has been with the company since 2014.

1. How long have you been with XL, and what is your role?

I have been with XL for just over five years – I joined the team in May of 2014.  In my role as Director of Customer Service, I lead the team responsible for ensuring our customers have the best experience possible with XL products in the field, and that any issues that arise are dealt with quickly and effectively.  I also internally represent customers to XL leadership, to ensure their perspectives and experience are being considered with every step we take as a company.

2. What is the best part of your job, or a favorite project you’ve been involved with, and why?

The best part of my job is helping customers and solving problems.  Our customers rely on their fleet vehicles to be up and running when they need them, and want the assurance of knowing their hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric drive systems are operating at peak performance.  Once they’re deployed, it’s my team’s job to ensure they are.

Working with our customers is definitely one of my favorite parts of the job. They are incredibly dedicated and knowledgeable in their jobs, and they’re passionate about wanting to help their organizations reduce their carbon footprint.

I have many great stories about my team’s dedication as well as my experience with customers, but one of my favorites was an unusual situation that happened recently.  One of our customers had an XL-upfitted vehicle stolen, and by using GPS data from our on-board XL Link telematics application, we were able to help them quickly recover the vehicle.

My favorite project so far at XL is definitely our plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) Ford F-150 application.  It was the most technologically advanced project the company had done so far, and it was great to be part of that unique vehicle’s market introduction.  It’s been a huge hit with customers.

This month’s Profiles in XLence features marketing manager Natalie Weimer, who has been with the company since 2014.

 

1. How long have you been with XL, and what is your role?

I started working at XL as a marketing manager in February, 2014.   In this role, I develop marketing, brand and communication strategies, and implement inbound and outbound marketing activities including tradeshows, webinars, blogs, our website, online and print advertising and social media (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook).

2. What is the best part of your job, or a favorite project you’ve been involved with, and why?

My favorite part of my job has been helping to morph our company from an unknown start-up into the leader in fleet electrification solutions.  This included launching the company’s brand redesign from XL Hybrids to XL, and developing a style guide and supporting materials needed to ensure a strong and consistent brand identity.

I also love developing lead generation activities including events, webinars, on-line advertising and e-communications to drive year-over-year revenue growth.  There’s nothing better than seeing a lead turn into a sale!

Q&A with an XL Team Member:  Tejas Chafekar, Firmware Engineering Manager

How long have you been with XL, and what is your role?

I’ve been with XL for 6 years now, starting as a controls engineer and progressing through my current role as firmware engineering manager.

I was hired to develop the ground-up design of the firmware for XL’s products, which have progressed over the years to put us in position to scale more quickly as we add more platforms and supplier options. I have seen XL grow from having a few test vehicles driving around Boston to thousands of customer vehicles across the U.S. and Canada.

In my current role, I’m now responsible for growing the team and keeping us aligned with industry standard compliances for XL’s safety-critical systems.  I’ve been heavily involved with the performance tuning (and managing the associated EPA certification processes) to achieve fuel consumption reduction targets across multiple platforms, and working with suppliers to better integrate their products into XL’s system.

What Customer Success Means to XL

Hi! My name is Jane Walsh, and my job at XL is to help you do your job more effectively.  How?  By digging deep into the details of your hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to make sure they’re performing at their best, and that you understand the value they’re delivering to your operations.

As XL’s first-ever senior customer success manager, it is my responsibility to understand your needs, analyze the vast amount of operational data we collect on your hybrid/plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and then summarize and communicate those results to you so you can better understand how your fleet vehicles are making a difference in your organization.

How does one person get all of this done? The answer is slowly, methodically and with a lot of customer input from you! My plan is to start by sharing data on your fleet performance and listening to your feedback. I can then provide you with helpful recommendations, along with ways to utilize that data to create better and more useful insights for your company.

What Customer Success Means to XL

VW Settlement Funding is Finally Here – Are You Ready?

It’s true! After months of fanfare, billions of dollars in VW settlement funding is now available to U.S. fleets. Here’s what you need to know.

Overview

Volkswagen has settled with the U.S. Department of Justice over the automaker’s efforts to cheat emissions testing.  As a result, nearly three billion dollars has been allocated to reduce diesel emissions in commercial vehicles across the United States.  That’s a lot of money, and fleets have an opportunity to use it to replace diesel-powered vehicles with cleaner, more fuel-efficient trucks moving forward.

Each U.S. state has had an opportunity to define their own program parameters. Most states have now done so, and their VW funding programs are ready to begin fielding reimbursement submissions. The funds are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, until funds run out – so now is the time to move forward.

The question is:  Are you ready to tap into what’s available in your state?
